The 4 Series will be available with three petrol engines and one diesel. There are two 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol’s offering 181bhp (420i) and 254bhp (430i), while a 48V mild-hybrid 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel produces 187bhp (420d) with the fuel economy being approximately 70mpg. There’s also the M440i xDrive, producing 369bhp and 369lb-ft from a 48V mild-hybrid 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine. Giving it a 0-62mph in 4.5 seconds, a top speed of 155mph and the fuel economy is approximately 40mpg.
All models are equipped with an eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission. M Sport cars feature a Sport gearbox which is an option on other models, giving you quicker shifts, launch control and a new driving mode named Sprint.
Inside, there’s an 8.8-inch central display which comes as standard and the instrument cluster gets a 5.1-inch display. Buyers can upgrade to a 10.25-inch central screen or the BMW Live Cockpit Professional set-up, with a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, and a head-up display.
The new 4 Series will go on sale in October, with prices starting from £39,870 for the 420i M Sport and will rise to £53,875 for the M440i. An M4 will be coming late next year, along with the 430d (282bhp), a M440d (335bhp) and an i4 (523bhp) electric saloon. Convertible and four-door Gran Coupé variants are also in development.
