About time. The new VW Golf GTI is here, joined by a GTD and a plug-in GTE. You get a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine in the GTI producing 242bhp and 273lb-ft. 0-60mph is expected to be under 6 seconds and a top speed of 150mph, with all the power sent to the front wheels.
The GTD gets a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine that uses twin-dosing to cut nitrogen emissions. With a power output of 197bhp and it’s only available with DSG auto.
The GTE has the same 242bhp engine as the GTI, but with more torque, being 295lb-ft. 148bhp comes from a 1.4-litre petrol engine, and the rest is from an electric motor that draws power from a 13kWh battery. A six-speed DSG auto meshes everything together and the EV-range is said to be around 37 miles.
They all get five-piece LED daytime running lights and can be spec’d with a full-width light bar that connecting with the headlights, which I’ve gotta say, looks smart. The GTI gets twin exhausts, one pipe on each side, the GTD gets a single twin-exit exhaust, while the GTE has no visible exhausts at all. From what I can see, the only thing I’m not too keen on is the wheels. Com’on…they look pants. Let’s hope there’s an optional extra for bigger, better looks wheels.
Prices are still yet to be released, but it’s expected to be just under £30k. You’ll be able to order the GTI and GTE models this summer. The Red coloured Golf is the GTI, while the blue one is the boring GTD, and the white is the plug-in GTE.
